Term life
A fixed number of years at a fixed premium, usually 10, 20 or 30. The most death benefit per dollar, which is why it fits the years when the mortgage is large and the children are still at home.
Term, permanent and final expense quoted across four carriers, priced on your age and health today, with no fee to you at any point.
It works out what your family would still owe if your paycheck stopped, then replaces it.
The number is not a rule of thumb. It is your mortgage balance, your spouse’s income, how many years your children still have at home, and whatever you want left once the funeral is paid for. We work through it on one call, and you keep the number whether you buy anything or not.
Term, permanent and final expense each solve a different problem. We match the policy to the problem, not the other way round.

Whole life and indexed universal life. Coverage that does not expire, plus a cash value that builds. Slower and dearer per dollar of benefit, used for estate planning and for obligations that outlive a term.
Small whole life policies, usually $5,000 to $25,000, written to cover a funeral and the bills after it. Simplified underwriting, often no medical exam, and available well into the seventies and eighties.
Quoted across Mutual of Omaha, Transamerica, Corebridge Financial and Gerber Life.

The shorthand is ten times your income, and it is wrong about as often as it is right. What matters is your debts, who depends on that income, and for how long. Fifteen minutes on the phone gets you a real number.
Neither is better in the abstract. Term covers a period, permanent covers an obligation with no end date. Plenty of families carry both, a large term policy over the mortgage years and a small permanent one underneath it.
Often not. Several of these carriers write accelerated underwriting for healthy applicants, and final expense is usually issued on health questions alone. We work out which route you qualify for before you apply.
Not on a level term or a whole life policy. Once it is issued the contract is fixed, and the death benefit stands as long as the premiums are paid.
Death benefits are generally not subject to federal income tax. Estate tax is a separate question that depends on who owns the policy and the size of the estate, and I will flag it if it applies to you. I am a licensed insurance agent, not a tax adviser, so anything complicated goes to yours.
Nothing. The carrier pays the commission, and your premium is the same whether you apply through me or on your own.
Ten minutes of math, then real prices at your age and health. No fee, and no pressure to buy anything.
